As a Product Design Extern at BeReal, I spent 8 weeks working under the Managing Director strategizing and designing MiniReals, a new feature aimed at strengthening BeReal’s long-term retention and growth.

Question

How might BeReal introduce a new feature that creates stronger close-friend rituals and a secondary engagement hook, in order to significantly improve user retention and drive sustainable growth?

Impact

In testing, increased user-reported weekly retention rate by 65%, increased user-reengagement by 45%

Understanding the Users

Analyzing Data from the Product Team

BeReal has surpassed 100 million downloads worldwide and maintains a strong Gen Z user base across key global markets. Users engage with the app daily around a shared moment, resulting in highly intentional, authentic interactions.

Analyzing Current Product Feedback

In 2025, some users and press note that BeReal’s experience can feel repetitive over time, with limited flexibility and discovery reducing long-term engagement.

Identifying Product Needs

The product should focus on clarifying its value, boosting sustainable engagement, deepening social connections, and building a growth engine for Gen Z networks.

Key Design Decisions

Decision: Incorporate a smaller scale version of BeReal's feature Why: Research shows that users are more likely to revisit and enjoy consistent use of an app if there is a more intimate social connection that subconsciously holds them accountable Result: Increased retention and reengagement
