North Atlantic Museum

Exhibition Branding Proposal

Overview

Project

The North Atlantic Museum in Copenhagen is expanding. The museum board is looking to incorporate a new, creative exhibit teaching Danish locals of all ages about the underwater ecosystem of the North Atlantic. The design team held an open design call for a visual identity to represent this exhibit. My proposal was selected as a finalist from 30 entries.

Question

How can I create a dynamic brand identity that entices both children and adults across languages to visit the exhibition?

Impact

Process

Research

I began this project by researching, collecting data, and finding creative inspiration in my environment. I discussed business goals with the museum board and found that the greatest needs for this design were consistency and accessibility for families.

Explore

I then began to iterate, sketch, and play around with some ideas. I created a precedence map to demonstrate how the exploration of a few of these questions led to my final product.

Define

Once I defined my guidelines, I was able to begin the deliverables to present to the board. This included UI for the Tranhuset app, a social media post, and some printed graphics.

Key Design Decisions

Decision: Minimize type and maximize global symbols and vector based design elements Why: Since the design directors wanted an identity that is recognizable and engaging across language and culture barriers, utilizing solely the kelp, Jellyfish, and name of the museum keep the design relevant and inclusive and reduce potential confusion

This design concept for Tranhuset encapsulates a true balance of organic versus orthogonal geometry, helping to convey the unique species of the North Atlantic through a clear and simple system.
