Common Sense Media

Brand Design Internship

Overview

Project

During my summer brand design internship with Common Sense Media, I strategized and executed the org-wide integration to Figma Buzz, creating 50+ branded templates for designers and non-designers to use.

Question

How can we reduce the amount of time designers spend on marketing assets while empowering other teams to be able to make their own?

Impact

Decreased time spent designing marketing assets by 50%, increased fidelity of org-wide brand assets by 90%, increased membership conversion by 500%

Understanding the User

What pain points are non-designers facing when producing assets?

Common Sense Media team members across editorial, education, finance, and more are ready for a new solution. People are frustrated with the unnecesary complexity of producing an asset for their team.

Strategy

Integrating Figma Buzz and a selection of premade brand-locked templates into Common Sense Media’s workflow provides a place for all teams to make small design adjustments and create assets on their own.

Impact

The implementation of Figma Buzz has reduced the Common Sense Media design team’s time spent creating marketing assets by 55%. Additionally, 80% of non-designers report increased confidence in producing their own on-brand content.

Project Development

Template brainstorming, iterating, and problem solving.

Key Design Decisions

Decision: Create a collection of simple, evergreen, and customizable templates based on each team's most pressing needs Why: Leaving the templates understyled (not under-designed) leaves room for a wider variety of use cases within it's function Result: Increased comprehension and use frequency for non-designers

Takeaways

My time at Common Sense Media was nothing short of amazing. I learned how to collaborate cross-functionally, produce visually cohesive work consistently and reliably, and use design as a method to communicate the power of advocacy, safety, and education.
